Personal Development – What is It?

Personal Development is a new term for a very old philosophy. The recent book The Secret has facilitated a huge resurgence of understanding of this real nature of reality. Older publications include Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich and Clement Stone’s How to Win Friends and Influence People but the roots of this knowledge go way back to 1500BC at least and were transcribed in the ancient Indian Vedic texts. In its infancy in the Western Hemisphere, relatively, but growing naturally and immensely as the truth of the nature of reality, The Secret, is becoming known. Our company is positioned within this growth wave at a very good time.

Deepak Chopra, a world renowned doctor, teacher and author, is being instrumental in getting the Vedic message out to the Western World. His brilliant works The Seven Spiritual Laws to Success , Ageless Body, Timeless Mind and Creating Affluence -are among some of numerous books, audiobooks and you tube videos available.

The reality is that THOUGHT is the principle creative force in the Universe. The relatively new Science of Neruo Chrenology substantiates this with the work of Dr Joe Dispenza and others. Dr Joe’s book – Evolve your Mind demonstrates the makeup of the human mind and explains how our huge Frontal Lobe in the Neo Cortex area of your brains, sets us aside from all other species, and illustrates that this structure is the powerhouse for the directive use of THOUGHT. Thought is a directed wave of energy. It is happening anyway – all the time – for better or for worse. Thoughts become things – so be very careful what you think about. Thought directed by our “true self” when ego is conquered will have dramatic and lasting effect on our lives and our futures including our finances! This is the basis of The Secret of Personal Development..

Recent discoveries have also highlighted a concept called NeuroPlasticity – nothing is fixed in a neural sense – all is fluid and able to change and be changed by thought no matter your age or circumstances. New synaptic connections are built continuously though life, with directed thought as old unused one decay.

Stop being the actors in your lives – and start being the producers of your world!

We are spiritual beings in a Human Experience.

The relatively new Science of Quantum Physics substantiates all this. The behaviour of subatomic particles is directly dependent on the act of observation. Matter is 99.8% empty space and at this quantum level, named by Deepak Chopra as the Quantum Field, all is a vibration of energy – and all is possible when one understands and applies the methods to connect with our true selves, connect to the Quantum Field – this is where thoughts become things.

We are vibrational manifestations and thought is the source.

Einstein formualted his formula for energy e=mc2. IN essence all is energy.

Every Personal Development Plan Must Have These 3 Elements

Having a personal development plan is key to getting the results you want and being successful in anything you do in life. The 3 elements I am going to share with you are crucial if you want success. So read carefully.

First of all this might be the most important one of all in your personal development plan so read carefully. Developing the right mindset is so important because this will determine how your day goes and how much effort you put into whatever you are trying to accomplish or whatever goal you are trying to achieve.

You must really know what your goals are and exactly how they are going to be attained. Without you knowing this you will fail in anything you do. So I want you to write down your major goals on a piece of paper and how you will attain them. Then read them out loud on a daily basis. This will keep your mind on the creative side with so much enthusiasm that your focus on whatever you are trying to achieve will sky rocket!

Personal development is learning that you procrastinating will never get you to where you want. So you must learn to take massive action on whatever you want to achieve in life daily and never make up excuses or blame others. Just take action everyday with a positive attitude and eventually things have to go your way!

The only way this will happen though is if you get off your couch and take action everyday! Lazy people never become rich and lazy people never live the lifestyle they want because they allow the television or whatever hobby they might have control their lives! Do not let that be you! Take massive action with a positive attitude on a daily basis that will take you to where you want to be or go in life. I love the next part.

This one is key as well! Never quit no matter what! Persistence is a big part of personal development and must be put into your plan in order to achieve big results. Without persistence you will find yourself just quitting after every struggle and obstacle that comes your way. This will not allow you to grow and develop yourself as a leader in your industry because you have already quit!

So remember just persist and be responsible for everything that happens to you in life and then just fix whatever has happened and move on and keep persisting until you have gotten what you wanted and achieved your goals! One last thing.

The Audacity and Unearned Ego of a Self Proclaimed Genius Self Help Guru Considered

When it comes to personal growth and personal character it must be earned, and that hardly matters if you a coach, mentor, or a client. To achieve in live and live without the stress and daily issues which drag on the psyche one must elevate their self-esteem and self-worth. The best way to do this is by overcoming adversity and building character. Question is can you do that on your own, or do you need a coach to help you over that first hurdle.

Some folks gain a strong sense of self early on, some not. Many go through their lives challenged by issues, and life things in their way – barriers, problems, self-doubt, or even personal family dilemmas. One observation that we’ve uncovered at our think tank in studying the personal growth coaching sector is that many of the coaches are worse off than the clients they seek, or the clientele which seek them out with payment in hand.

We’ve noted that there are a number of coaches online who prey upon users of social media; Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace to garner clients. It is getting to be quite problematic, we’ve seen questionable individuals showing up online from Canada, claiming to be able to help young teenagers in California for instance. In fact, one coach out of Calgary, Canada, had the audacity to not even give his last name on his website or on the articles he’s written. No one knows exactly who he is or what is after, which is a scary concern these days online for parents, police, and potentially concerned politicians.

Therefore, we have some advice for anyone seeking a so-called “professional personal coach” and we’ve been preparing an expose research piece to show just how bad things are. Some is outright fraud, while others are perhaps unemployed home based folks just trying to pay their rent. Nevertheless, you need to know before you hire them. Here are some tips below:

1. If a coach does not display their true, full, and correct name on their website or articles beware.

2. Always ask for at least 5-references and do call them.

3. Watch for passive-aggressive behavior in online correspondence, how are they treating others.

4. Watch for coaches who claim to be certified geniuses, or famous.

5. Look for a coach who operates in the real world, and not just online – never give out personal information.

6. Watch to make sure the coach in question is living as an example of what they are preaching.

7. Watch out for cliches, long sales letters on websites, and pay in advance and all upfront schemes.

Personal Development Books, They Make A Difference If You Do

Will reading personal development books change your life?

Let me answer this question with another one. Will reading map books get you to the places featured on the maps?

The answer to the second one is so obvious is it not? If you do not travel, you will not get there, no matter how good the map is.

Why then do people expect personal development books to work, if they do not?

I think that the reasons are probably many and varied, but I will offer a couple of suggestions which I think might be relevant.

Firstly, there are many books which refer to how important our thoughts are, to how we live our lives.

One of the best known examples is the viral success – ‘The Secret’.

There is absolutely no doubting the vital importance of our thoughts, in designing a successful life.

The errors occur when it is forgotten to ensure that those thoughts lead on to appropriate action. I have learned of many instances where people have taken on board the positive thinking and visualization.

Believing that to be enough, they do not make the changes in habitual behavior, which would allow the desired success to be attracted to them.

This is really more like wishful thinking than creative visualization.

Another common mistake is to think that a radical new idea or belief can be absorbed and put into practice after only one reading. I myself fell into this trap for a number of years.

I read voraciously and soak in information as efficiently as possible. Because my understanding of ideas and concepts is probably as good as most people’s, I really believed that anything new and important would take root and be reflected in my future behavior.

It became obvious that this was not true, when I was able to re-read some of the classics. I found that I ‘knew about’ great possibilities for growth, but was simply not implementing them.

At some time, I had an ‘Aha’ moment, realised I ‘knew about’ these things on an intellectual basis, but had not taken them into my heart.

Now, when I meet a new idea which has potential, I read and study until it becomes part of my being – along with the rest of my belief system.

I have found that this will soon influence my actions – particularly those governed by habit – and so be reflected in my results.

In other words, my personal development books work when I do.

Book Summary: "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho

When Kathleen O’Grady, Founder and CEO of Raleigh Coaching, suggested that I read this book, I could tell that she was excited for me to do so… and for good reason. Coelho’s book was written 25 years ago and is just as relevant today.

The Alchemist is a story about a Spanish boy, Santiago, who loves his life as a shepherd and the time that it gives him to read books and to dream. From a young age, Santiago has wanted to travel, and shepherding takes him across the country and from village to village, selling his wool. However, he yearns for more; wanting to travel farther, to experience new things, and to “know the world.”

In his pursuit, Santiago encounters many people who have a profound impact on him. For example, one day, he visits a Gypsy whom he hopes can interpret a reoccurring dream in which a child says to Santiago that he will find a hidden treasure if he travels to the Egyptian pyramids. The Gypsy has difficulty understanding his dream’s meaning but says that Santiago must travel to the Egyptian pyramids because there he will “find a treasure that will make (him) a rich man.”

Skeptical of the Gypsy, Santiago carries on with his shepherding. In another encounter, an old man explains that a book Santiago is reading describes “people’s inability to choose their own Personal Legends,” which, he explains, are the things that people always wanted to accomplish. Essentially, that one’s Personal Legend is their mission on earth and their only real obligation. Santiago is curious about his own Personal Legend and how near to or far from it he is.

The old man also tells Santiago of the world’s greatest lie: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and that our lives become controlled by fate. That a mysterious force exists which, over time, convinces each of us that it will be impossible to realize our own Personal Legend. The old man tells Santiago that he shouldn’t believe this lie and suggests, instead, that when a person truly wants something, the universe conspires in their favor and helps them achieve it. Santiago thinks about his many life experiences and wonders how the universe has helped him progress toward his (as yet unidentified) Personal Legend.

Another of Santiago’s encounters is with a crystal merchant who doesn’t like change, doesn’t dream, and has owned and managed the same low-performing crystal shop in the same location for 30 years. The merchant explains to Santiago that he doesn’t dream because he is afraid that if his dream is realized, he would have no reason to go on living. And that he is also afraid that actually realizing his dream would be a disappointment compared to what it imagines it would be, so he prefers merely to dream about it instead of pursuing it.

Santiago stays in that Moroccan village and works for the crystal merchant who, over time, comes to appreciate Santiago’s zest for life and his pursuit of his dreams. He also comes to believe that every blessing ignored becomes a curse and eventually sees how immense his possibilities are; and that dreams are meant to be pursued, stating “there’s just no way to hold back the river.”

After 11 months of working with the crystal merchant, Santiago decides to travel to the Pyramids to see if the Gypsy was correct that he would find his treasure there. He has some doubts but understood that making a decision was only the beginning of things. And that, when you make a decision, you are “diving into a strong current that will carry (you) to places (you have) never dreamed of.” As Santiago travels with a caravan across the desert toward the Pyramids, he senses that the closer one gets to his Personal Legend, the more that Personal Legend becomes his true reason for being.

He comes to view that the obstacles a person faces during their journey toward their Personal Legend are similar to the problems encountered by the caravan as it pressed on across the desert: large rocky areas, sand that was too fine for the camels’ hooves, dried up lakes, terrible sand storms, etc. But no matter how many detours and adjustments it made, the caravan continually moved toward the same destination, just as Santiago endeavored to stay focused on his Personal Legend.

During his quest, Santiago took many chances, faced dangers, and overcame numerous obstacles, but was diligent about returning to his course. He found that the threat of death makes people a lot more aware of their lives and he came to believe what Allah has said: people need not fear the unknown if they are capable of achieving what they need and want. And he understood that once you truly commit yourself to achieving your Personal Legend, such that you can’t go back, then you have to worry only about the best way of moving forward.

Eventually, Santiago found his Personal Legend during his journey to the Pyramids, but it wasn’t what he had envisioned, such as material wealth or fame. Learning rather that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure – and to focus on being and becoming, not merely doing. He also learned that anyone who interferes with the Personal Legend of another thing never will discover his own.

He saw that people are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel they don’t deserve them or that they’ll be unable to achieve them. And that there is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure. But that the fear of suffering is often worse than the suffering itself.

A final thought from this book: The quest for one’s Personal Legend (mission on earth) may seem to be a very future-oriented endeavor. However, Santiago learned to appreciate living in the present, and the perils of living in the past or the future. “If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And, if you improve on the present, what comes later will also be better. Forget about the future, and live each day according to the teachings, confident that God loves his children. Each day, in itself, brings with it an eternity.

Living Purposefully and Achieving Personal Mastery

Personal mastery is the result of setting goals and achieving success and is rooted in continuous self-improvement, especially towards gaining a competency in skill or knowledge. Some people have large lofty goals like surpassing Bill Gates’ net worth of $79.2 billion or creating an Oprah-sized media empire. Others may have specific target goals like losing five pounds, getting into shape or having a peaceful home life.

Regardless of one’s goal, an important fundamental task for achieving personal mastery is purposeful living. Or establishing clarity around what you are doing, why you are doing it, and understanding the greater benefit of what you are doing. The best way to get that type of clarity is through a personal vision.

Creating A Personal Vision

A personal vision is basically big picture thinking. It’s the concept behind your goal setting because it shows you where you are headed and can provide all of the possibilities of many directions that you can travel. If you don’t already have a vision for your life, the best way to identify one is connect with yourself, your inner being, and began to picture an image of the future that you would like to have.

Here’s a very quick mindfulness exercise to try: Try closing your eyes and actually seeing yourself as the person you want to be. What are you doing? What can you see? How do you feel? Are you alone or with others? How are people relating to you? Embrace this image and when you are ready, open your eyes. Now back in the present moment is where the real work begins. This is often the hardest thing for many people to do, but write down what you saw. Doesn’t have to be fancy words, just describe it in your own words, and this is the beginning of crafting a vision for your life.

If you ask anyone you admire how they accomplished their level of success, and they will emphatically tell you they set a goal for themselves, created a plan, and worked hard at mastering specific tasks. At the core of their goal was a personal vision with an anticipated outcome. Yes, there may have been some life detours, but the vision remained constant, and this is a person who is living on purpose.

Committing to Self-Discipline

Another key element of personal mastery is self-discipline. Just like a runner preparing for a marathon, one must be disciplined enough to follow an exercise and running regimen to ensure their body is trained and prepared to endure the rigors of the race. That’s the same type of motivation required for mastering personal success.

I recall sharing my vision of running as an example of goal setting in a study skills class of high school students. I told them that in my mind I see myself running, but I never take action. I have the vision and can see me running but I lack the self-discipline to commit to running. I explained that self-discipline is holding yourself accountable to do what is right to meet your goals and objectives in life. It motivates the action that is necessary to fulfill your personal vision and stay the course.

On a personal note, I still hold steadfast to the vision of running, and have begun small steps to motivate myself towards that end. Your approach towards achieving self-discipline may be to just jump in and just do it, as the Nike slogan suggests. But always do what works best for you. No one else is the best indicator of your heart’s desire, capabilities or personal circumstances. It’s better to feel good about your vision, goals and progress than set up false expectations and later abandon the vision forever. When you stay the course, no matter how long it takes, that’s personal mastery. And in time, you will also have a great story to share about overcoming obstacles to achieve personal mastery that will be a motivator for someone else. That’s real purposeful living when your experiences positively impact change in someone else.

In Summary

The desire for personal mastery begins with awareness of purposeful living. Next, a personal vision is the roadmap to guide your living. And lastly, self-discipline promotes the action that is necessary to achieve success. Wishing you all the best towards your own discovery of personal mastery.

Enjoy (And Visualize)!

How Helping Others Helps You

There’s no doubt that helping people has been my life for many years. Right from the time when I was a programmer at British Aerospace and used to help my friends debug their programs to my business working with Chet Holmes and Tony Robbins as their business coach across the world.

The Huffington Post even reports on research that shows you’re happier when you’re helping people at work! More research also shows you live longer by contributing to others.

Of course, when I set out on my career I didn’t know this research! I just loved to help people, which unfortunately when I started my own business meant I did a lot of work for nothing.

I learned my lesson – no food on the table – pretty quickly. However, that’s never stopped me from helping people anyway.

The most exciting thing I found when I’m in the middle of something with other people is when they realize they can do more than they thought. A really lovely factor in coaching.

However, ultimately I realized I was only helping a small fraction of the number of people who could benefit from the knowledge and tools I had. So I wrote a short book (called Leap Ahead of Your Competitors) that was intended to help all the smaller companies with marketing and running a business. Because I wanted the maximum number of people to benefit I used to hand it out for free to those who couldn’t afford my coaching but I knew would benefit from its contents.

Then I thought, part of the journey for any entrepreneur or business person is personal growth. A topic that is unseen but makes a huge difference to people, their families and people they know. So I decided to create a Facebook group called Personal Growth Tips to help people with their personal growth. If you’d like to take a peek it’s at

Again, I didn’t want to charge because my intention is to help as many people as possible to improve their current situations, but more than that I wanted their kids to benefit too. At the same time I know I’m not the fount of all personal growth knowledge! So I wanted to create a community that would help each other and grow together.

So, like I say the group is free to join and I’m looking at everyone who knows me to see who wants to grow and helps others do the same.

3 Personal Development Ideas To Greatly Enhance Your Life

I got good personal development ideas to share with you. Some of them might seem a little unorthodox, and perhaps you might even wonder what they’ll do for you, but give it a chance and you might be surprised at how your life improves.

Interested in personal growth ideas? Read on!

Personal Development Idea # 1: Visit New Places.

Traveling is a good way to see aspects of yourself you previously did not know. A new environment will push you to be daring and adventurous.

While a trip to Italy or India might be a cool way to do this, you don’t necessarily have to leave the country to get your personal development’s worth.

Is there an art gallery in town? Why don’t you stop by there on your way home from work? What about a museum? If there’s one near you or even in the next town, what’s stopping you from making the trip? Trust me: A little adventure will take you places!

Personal Development Idea # 2: Set Higher Goals.

Ideas to improve yourself aren’t always easy to explore. Right now, your goal might be to last a year at your company. However, I’m sure you can do better than that!

Setting low goals might feed your need for security for a while; but sooner or later, you need to push yourself to fulfill a higher goal. Unless you set yourself up for something higher, you’re always going to remain in that little desk of yours. Where’s the development in that?

It’s scary indeed, but you’ll never know until you try. Besides, you can always try and try again.

Personal Development Idea # 3: Focus On The Right Things.

Focus is a vital key to success. The problem is, most of us focus on entirely the wrong things. Instead of thinking about missed opportunities and failed tasks, think about what other ways there are to advance your stature.

Thinking about negative things won’t help you one bit, so make sure you divert all your energies towards positive matters.

These personal development ideas have been tried and tested over time and by many different people. It doesn’t matter what family you’re from or where you studied, what matters most is how you see yourself. Don’t let other people discourage you from trying to be the best person you can be. The power you need is in you. You just have to tap into it.

3 Stages of Complacency

“We shall have no better conditions in the future if we are satisfied with all those which we have at present.” Thomas Edison said that. When we start to live our lives in a satisfied state we basically come to a stop. Here are the three stages of complacency that you want to avoid.

No Goal. Not having a goal leads to a whole host of problems. Some of which are lack of direction, boredom and irritability. We start to wander from one activity to the next desiring to be satisfied. But when we have no goal we end up disappointed. Everything seems like a complete waste of time.

No change in personal growth. When you are not growing you are in effect dying. If you are not actively seeking out positive messages and taking them in then you are by default receiving negative. The evening news gives you a big dose of negativity every day. You must combat the gloom and doom by going to work on improving yourself. Otherwise you will be washed down the sea of mediocrity. Personal growth should be an ongoing process. The more you grow the more you help yourself and everyone around you. This increases your happiness and fulfillment.

A general feeling of self-satisfaction. You can look around at your friends and associates and say, “I’m not doing so bad.” But it is not wise to compare yourself to others. We are meant to be all that we can be. I t makes us happy to strive to live up to our true potential. When you are summing up your accomplishments measure them against your own personal best not someone else’s achievements. If we strive every day to become better than we were the day before then we can truly rest each night with a feeling of satisfaction.
