Keep on track — when distractions, obstacles and problems come your way knowing you will be reporting to someone what you have achieved keeps you on track. Most people prefer reporting they have accomplished certain tasks rather than reporting on all the distractions which have prevented them from doing what they said they would do. You are less inclined to allow distractions to take over when you will be reporting your progress to someone.

Focus — knowing you will be reporting to someone about your actions in terms of your goals, focuses your attention even for a little while to take action towards achieving your goal. Small accomplishments move you in the right direction towards achieving your goal

Actions are more deliberate — thinking about and planning what you are going to accomplish in the next week or so helps you to focus on what actions you need to take to accomplish what you have committed yourself to accomplish. You are more likely to find the most effective ways to accomplish your tasks

Get support — we all need support and having someone to be accountable to provides you with this support. This is important whether you successfully accomplish your tasks or not. Knowing you have got someone who cares about your progress is essential particularly when difficulties and obstacles arise

A different perspective — being accountable to someone has the potential to expand your possibilities to achieve your goal by providing different ideas, thoughts, ways of doing things from another person

Feedback — we all respond to feedback, whether from ourselves or from others. Feedback lets us know how we are going, what we need to work on, what we need to change, what we are doing that’s moving us towards achieving our goal

Talking or writing our plan to someone is beneficial — personal development experts agree writing out your goals is an essential part of achieving them. So too is talking your plans and progress through with someone else.

Goal Setting – Where Did the Time Go? – How to Beat the Time-Stealers

Do you ever get to the end of your day, look back and find that you’ve achieved absolutely nothing? For a goal setter, there is nothing more frustrating than those days that just seem to mysteriously disappear.

In my experience there are three main reasons why some days seem to slide off into the ether without you noticing.

Here are my biggest time-stealers and how to stop them.

  1. Not having a plan. Although I am a regular and, I think, pretty efficient goal setter, I do not always start each day with a proper plan. Sometimes for various reasons, I miss my regular planning slot, the night before and I wake up with only a vague idea of what I am going to do today.

    So I start something, do it for a while, then drift to something else and maybe dabble for a while in something completely irrelevant and then before I know it; the day has gone.

    So my Stealer Beater No 1 is – Write down your plan and stick to it.

  2. Distractions. Even when I do have a well-written plan; even when I have mapped out my day, hour by hour, I still sometimes let down my guard and allow distractions to get in the way of me achieving my set tasks.

    Sometimes, sure, there are genuine emergencies and things that absolutely must be done, but these are thankfully rare. What I’m talking about here is the day to day things that crop up all the time. People needing your help, ringing telephones, an inbox full of e-mails. All of these have their place, but they should never be allowed to take priority over your goals.

    So Stealer Beater No 2 is – Take control of your distractions. Only allocate them the non critical time they deserve, when it suits you.

  3. Lack of motivation. There have been times in my life when I struggle to raise the energy to meet my goals. When this happens, I ask myself two key questions. Is this procrastination? In which case the only cure is keep working right on through the voices in my head, telling me to quit. Or, is this a lack of belief in my goal.

    If I find myself questioning my belief, then it is time to re-examine the goal and figure out if it is really what I want to do. Sometimes, it turns out that I have set the wrong goal, or things have changed and it is less relevant to me now.

    So my final Stealer Beater is – Drown out the voices or run a goal check, I guarantee you it will be one or the other.

Goal Setting – Three R’s to Keep You on Track

You have set your goal, mapped out your path and started along your life changing journey. But what happens when your resolve begins to crumble? How do you cope with setbacks and sometimes, how do you just keep going when you feel as though you have made minimal progress?

Here are three R’s to keep you on track.

R number 1 is for Review. We are often told to keep our eyes focused on our goal and not look back, but this is one time when looking back can be positively beneficial. This is not the kind of looking back that takes your emotions back to the things you don’t like to remember, though. This is looking back at what you have achieved, since you began working towards your goal.

A few years ago, when I realised that I could no longer rely on my body’s natural fitness, to keep me slim and when I noticed the effects of age making me short of breath and when my clothes didn’t fit so well; I set a goal to get fit, become a regular gym goer and be able to run 5 miles without dying prematurely.

I set to work with great enthusiasm and pushed myself hard for the first few weeks. Then I began to find it more difficult to motivate myself to hit the road in the mornings and I was finding excuses not to go to the gym.

But then a conversation with a friend prompted me to look back over what I had achieved so far. I realised that not only, could I now run nearly two miles without requiring an ambulance but that I had also already upped my weights twice at the gym and my resting pulse had dropped 5 beats per minute. I began to appreciate that my efforts were paying off.

R number 2 is for Rejoice. As well as reviewing it is important to congratulate yourself for a job well done. As George Adams once said, “We all hunger for applause”. And it is just as valid, even if you have to applaud yourself.

Suddenly after my review, I felt a whole lot better about what I had achieved by my own efforts. I could see what benefits I had already accrued and I was eager to keep going.

Ceremoniously, I crossed off the goal steps on my progress chart, smiled at myself in the mirror and that night with friends, I felt perfectly justified in indulging in some mild bragging. It felt good.

R number 3 is for Reward. Finally as part of your goal plan it is a great idea to build in certain larger milestones which will trigger a reward.

After reaching the 2.5 mile mark and a certain level of weights and repetitions in the gym, I had told myself, that I would buy myself a home rowing machine, so that when winter came and I couldn’t go running so often, I could still keep up the regime.

Well I got there and it was a great feeling when I went to the store and ordered my machine. Sure, I could have afforded to buy one when I started, but this way, I really felt as though I had earned it and it made me appreciate it all the more.

So whatever goal you have set yourself, don’t forget to keep yourself going with these three motivational R’s. Review, Rejoice and Reward.

Goal Setting – Why Persistence Isn’t Always the Answer

What are some of the essential qualities necessary to become successful? If, like me, you’ve spent a good deal of time reading ‘how to be successful’ books, you will recognize that most of them list traits and personal attributes shared by most successful people. Some of these are; desire, goal oriented, commitment, decisiveness, definiteness of purpose, focus, and several others. You will also find the word persistence mentioned by most as the chief ingredient necessary for success. It’s the quality of sticking to something through the ups and downs, never quitting, but striving forward toward eventual success. While just about all would agree that persistence is necessary to succeed at anything, is there a point where persistence becomes foolhardy stubbornness, an unwillingness to face reality, and make necessary change?

In the book, ‘Think and Grow Rich’, Napoleon Hill states that one of the qualities Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Motor Company possessed in abundance was the quality of persistence. Hill stated that once Ford locked onto an idea, he would persist with it doggedly until he succeeded. It didn’t matter to him how long it took, he would stick with it until he ultimately achieved his goal. This unyielding persistence helped him to build Ford into the largest automotive manufacturer of his time. While this trait of Ford’s was in no small way responsible for his success, the author later states how this characteristic almost caused the ruin of Ford by his refusal to modify the design of the Model ‘T’ Ford. The same quality that served him so well in building his company worked against him in adapting to change.

Among the people who know the current president intimately, several say that one of his most pronounced traits is persistence, an intractable obstinacy that compels him to see something through to the end. While some may see this as an quality to be desired, others see it as a reckless stubbornness that can ultimately lead to failure and in the case of war, possible disaster. Where you stand on this issue mostly depends upon what side of the fence you’re on politically, but the point is that there are indeed times when change is necessary. The problem is in determining when that time has come? As stated in a song from a few years ago, “good things come to those who wait, not to those who wait too late”. There are in fact times when change does indeed come too late.

Unfortunately, figuring out when it’s appropriate to keep on keeping on, make slight changes, or possibly head in a completely new direction is not something that comes with built in instructions. One of the things that has helped me to determine where I stand with something is setting goals and constantly evaluating those goals. Setting realistic goals and evaluating where you are helps to clarify what you’ve done right, and where you’re falling short. It may be that you just need to tweak an idea or plan slightly, but without a road map, a clear vision of where you are and where you want to go, it will be difficult to evaluate and therefore determine if you need to continue on or alter your plan or goals.

One of the keys in using this approach is to first make sure your goals are realistic. For example, wanting to run in a marathon sounds great but do you really understand what it’s going to take to get there? Setting realistic short term goals and evaluating where you are on a regular basis will help to see where you’re at and what changes you need to make to help you accomplish your goal or perhaps modify it. While I am all for setting goals, I believe we have to be flexible with our goals. While you may eventually run in the Boston Marathon, perhaps you’ll discover along the way that running in a marathon is not that important, but designing better running shoes is really what floats your boat. We need to understand that our goals are not set in stone, and that we can, and sometimes need to change them along the way.

As the one constant in life is change, so it should be with our goals and choices. While persistence is a desire to be cultivated, we also need to understand that we can sometimes stay with something far too long. We need to evaluate our goals from time to time to see if we’re on the right track, or possibly going in a direction that will lead us to a dead end or perhaps even worse.

Goal Setting is Arguably the Fastest Way to Achieve Business Success

In December many people prepare and write their wish list to Santa. Amazingly there are many similarities to this, and the process of effective Goal setting for your business. You see, with Santa you write out what goodies you want him to deliver down your chimney on Christmas Eve. Well, the great news is that the process of goal setting is exactly the same. However, one main difference is that you don’t just get your presents on Christmas morning. There are also some techniques that will increase you chances of getting them. Writing your goals is probably the most important factor in the whole process. In fact Brian Tracey states that “committing your goals to paper increases the likely hood of achieving them by 1000%”.

The first step of the process is to get a pen and some paper. Get your creative juices flowing and quickly brainstorm a list of 50 goals. This list should include things you want in the next 12 months but others may be more long term goals. A word of warning here, be careful what you wish for as there is a good probability that you will get it. Albert Einstein stated that “your imagination is your preview of your lifes future attractions” How cool is that, just by spending some time thinking, planning and deciding what you want increases the chances of it becoming reality. What would you wish for if you knew you could have it all? Nevertheless, the sad reality is that most people spend more time planning their vacations than their life.

For many people the process of designing a life is new and not a natural habit. Therefore, group your goals into specific categories, this should help the creative flow. Jim Rohn suggests focusing on three things. Things you want to have, things you want to do and the type of person you wish to become. Another way to help you write the list is list goals that are Spiritual, Financial and Health related. Once complete, go through the whole list and ask yourself why you want to achieve that goal. Why is very important because the bigger this is the easier it will be to stay focused. Next take each goal and apply the following SMARTprocess. Smart refers to specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time.

Make each goal very specific. For example don’t just say “I want to earn more money”. Instead specify in the present tense exactly how much money you wish to earn. For example “I now earn $50K per month”.

Measurable relates to knowing exactly when the goal has been achieved successfully. Such a goal would be “You want to generate 30 new prospects every day” As opposed to “You want more prospects”

An Achievable goal should cause you to stretch sightly but you should feel beyond doubt that you can attain it. An achievable goal may be to send out 30 friend requests on Facebook every day. Whereas an unrealistic one may be to have a million friends in two hours but as things stand right now you only have 2.

Realistic means that you must be able to devise a plan of action to get there. Maybe you will need to learn new skills along the way. For example you may be an Internet ‘newbie’ and you’ll need to earn all about web 2.0 and how to use it in order to generate your 30 new prospects that you want every day.

A well formed goal should have a Time for completion. When that time arrives you will know whether or not you have been successful.

These steps will result in well formed goals. According to Brian Tracy the next, and most important step is to write them down. Be proud of your goals – don’t scribble them on an old scrap of paper. Rather buy a nice new journal or note book and write them in there. Always write them out in the present tense, as if they have already been achieved. Many people suggest that you refer to your goals first thing in the morning and last thing at night, just before bed. This gets your subconscious mind working for you 24 hours a day, spotting opportunities that can help you reach them.

You should also write the main ones out on focus cards and carry these with you at all times. Look at them and read them out to yourself whenever you get the chance through the day. A goal or dream board is another method of increasing momentum. Collect and stick up pictures of all the things you want. Most people hang the board somewhere at home where they will see it often, maybe in their home office.

Goal Setting Success: A Ridiculously Small Goal

One of the tricks to effective goal setting is making sure that your goals are big enough to make you stretch, but not so big that you can’t even begin to believe that it might be possible for you to achieve.

The first goal I can ever remember intentionally setting was to eat lunch in the company cafeteria. You see, I was terminally shy and did every thing I could to avoid being around people. One of the reasons that I became an aerospace engineer was that I didn’t have enough charisma to be an accountant! As long as I was buried in my cubicle doing my ‘engineering thing’, I was fine. But the minute I had to interact with someone else, I panicked. I had never eaten lunch in the company cafeteria for fear that someone would sit down next to me and I would have to carry on a conversation.

After deciding to pursue my entrepreneurial bent and start my own business (while still working fulltime at the big corporation) I realized that if I didn’t get some people skills, I would never be successful. So, my first goal was to eat lunch in the cafeteria. Most of you are probably thinking, “That is the most ridiculously small goal I have ever heard of!” But, to me it was huge.

I remember the first day I got a tray of food and sat down at a table that was empty (long cafeteria-style tables), and prayed that no one would sit down next to me. They didn’t. After surviving a couple of days of that I decided I would sit down at a table that had one person at it. But I sat at the opposite end on the same side so that there was no way we would ever make eye contact. I lived through a couple of days of that too, so next, I decided to sit at a table with only one person, at the opposite end, but the opposite side, so we might actually make eye contact and have to say hello.

Finally after a couple of weeks I began to sit down across from somebody and say hello first. That goal was a big stretch for me. But the beauty of goal setting is that as you approach a goal, you can begin to set a bigger one that continues to make you stretch. Today I am a superb communicator with great people skills – after tons of tapes, seminars and mentors. When I first started in business I would never have been able to envision myself where I am today. It would have been so far beyond my expectations that I never would have even attempted to change; I would have given up on the idea that it was even possible.

But, I could envision myself eating in the company cafeteria – eventually carrying on a conversation. I’ve climbed all 54 mountains in Colorado that are over 14,000 feet in elevation. Do you know how you climb a peak that size? One step at a time. The company cafeteria was the first step. Some of us may take much smaller steps than others, but if we just keep taking those small steps it is amazing what we can eventually accomplish.

I Got Confused While Setting Goals – Are You?

Many of the success gurus speak of goal setting. In fact, goal setting is so important in keeping the laws of success, that if any one purporting to be a success guru minimizes goals setting, they are not the “real deal”.

Even so, while studying so many success laws and principles, I would get confused by the goal setting process. I would hear that I needed a clear concise, measurable goal and then I would hear that I needed to describe how I wanted my life to turn out. I would learn of vision boards and life visions. Bob Proctor teaches to begin writing a clear goal by starting out with “I am so happy and grateful now that I…” fill in the blank. In fact, fill in two or three pages of whatever.

All of this was very confusing for me because I saw it all as one mechanism – a goal. I did not realize I could break the process down into several smaller parts. I did not realize that when chunking down goals, I need to start with the general or big idea and then break it down into smaller pieces. When I had that “aha”, the confusion dissipated and clarity prevailed. So permit me to clarify for you how I did it.

I started with the big picture and work down into the relevant details. That means I began by writing my life vision. What’s a life vision? In a nutshell it is an overview of how you want your life to be. Some people write it as though it was the last day of their life on earth and now they are describing what their life was like in hind sight. Others use Bob Proctor’s script, “I am so happy and grateful, now that I…”.

One thing to keep in mind is to use the present tense in all your verb usage. You know, ‘I am’, ‘I do’, ‘I have’. Avoid future tense, such as ‘I will’ or ‘I want’ and past tense such as ‘I was’, ‘I did’ or ‘I had’

It is a good idea to organize your life into categories and write about your life in the context of those categories. Some categories might include: your inner, or spiritual life; your relationships, or family life; your physical life and health; your emotional life and health; your business, your career, and your financial life, dreams and aspirations. Woven throughout these categories you will write your life’s purpose, your mission, your message to the world.

Your life vision most likely will include life-long goals, but not something you expect to accomplish next month or this year. However, another confusion I had about life visions was that they are carved in granite. They are not. I had one mentor tell me she rewrote her life vision about 6-10 times per year.

How long should your life vision be? You will be reading, or listening to it at least twice a day for the rest of your life. So if you were to read it out loud, it should take you about 10-15 minutes to read. Some people take as much as 20 minutes to read their life vision.

Once you have written a life vision, you can now chunk your more specific goals down to annual or monthly goals, or even more specific. These are the goals you will write down separately and read about 70 times per week. Again, these goals are specific, measurable and written in the present tense as well.

The third category of goals is the vision board. This is goal setting at its most fun. You literally create a “tic-tac-toe” (nine boxes) on your wall with painters tape, or you can get as elaborate as you want. Me, I took an old framed picture, purchased from a thrift store, and put my nine boxes on it in duct tape. Pretty sophisticated huh? Then you place pictures or three by five cards in the boxes. Make sure you review your vision board for three minutes in the morning when you first get up and for three minutes at night before you go to bed.

So here are the three main ways to set your goals; a life vision, specific goals that are chunked down to a detailed level and your vision board. I recommend doing all three. There will be some overlapping of your goals between the three methods, but hey, I would want all the reinforcement I can get, wouldn’t you?

2. Passionate and inspirational to us! When setting your goals be consumed by passion! You want to be totally inspired so that you are drawn to all the events that you will experience to achieve your goals. Remember that being passionate in life makes it possible to reach your life’s purpose.

3. Harmonious to your sense of self! When checking in with your intuition see if all goals are in harmony with your core beliefs and your life’s purpose. Trust the feeling that you get inside you when you explore the relationship of your goals to you.

4. Totally realistic or achievable! When dreaming about your goals balance your imagination with reality so that you can really obtain your goals in real life. Plus, being realistic doesn’t mean you have to conform to “accepted” beliefs or squash your imagination… just make sure you can humanly achieve them.

5. Idealistic! Integrating your personal ideals on the real life situations is also essential. Tune into your intuition to explore your goals in relation to the following… by doing so you will reach your highest potential…

A. Money and Material Things,

B. Health of Body, Home and World,

C. Happiness, Love, Social Contact,

D. Learning, Awareness, Self-Knowledge, and

E. Unity, Life Purpose, Values, Sacredness.

6. Specific enough! Be exact and detail oriented when setting up your goals. Define how you want to be happy, spiritually fulfilled, etc. Being vague will set you up for not knowing if and when your reach your goals!

7. Adaptable to change! By using your intuition to develop your goals imagine the best possible way for you to fulfill your goal- not just the method.

8. Visualize, Visualize, Visualize! Visualize your goals as real, true and as part of the way you live your life. Again using your intuition dig deep and find what truly resonates with what you are visualizing!

9. Write them down! When writing your goals down they become real and statistics show that 95% of people who write their goals down accomplish them.

10. Carried out in a specific time frame! Using words like “someday” will set your intuitive process in motion to not accomplish what you set out to do. So set dates, timeframes, etc. and you will reach your life purpose!

Remember, setting goals by using and trusting your imagination will help you reach your dreams, desires, passions and life’s purpose… Don’t delay… Write down your goals using these guidelines.
